. You're allowed up to 800 sf for an official ADU (accessory dwelling unit) in the city of Portland. You can go up to 20' tall to the middle of the roof if you want. If you go that far vertically, design stipulations kick in, dictating the new structure to have a design language similar to the main house. If you keep the structure 15' or less in height you don't have to do this.

Our client, who is used to living in a 325 sf NYC apartment, wanted nothing to do with 800 sf, or a 20' tall structure that had to speak to the main house. A fan of, and former student of architecture, and a minimalist at heart, challenged us to come up with a creative solution using the existing 20' square garage on the property, adding onto only if needed. Outdoor space a must as well. With a robust program to contend with, we set out on our new mission.
