Courtney Rd. Renovation + Addition
Perched high in the trees along Courtney Road in White Salmon, this existing residence — once a weekend escape — is being reimagined as a thoughtfully expanded full-time home for a family of four. Anchored by the forest that surrounds it the project embraces its setting while resolving the spatial and programmatic limitations of the original house.
Rather than replacing what exists, the design carefully weaves new work into the existing fabric: a newly added kitchen and primary suite open the home to light, views, and daily life with finesse. The addition extends the living spaces outward, enhancing connections to the outdoors while maintaining a grounded presence within the landscape.
A reconfigured entry sequence and front porch establish a more intentional arrival, knitting together old and new through an expanded main living area that resolves the previously awkward vaulted interior. This connective spine creates a coherent spatial narrative — aligning circulation, light, and program in a way that feels both generous and integrated.
Rather than erasing the existing house, the design clarifies and elevates it—transforming a quiet retreat into a refined, light-filled, and highly livable headquarters for everyday life in the Gorge.
