Courtney Rd.

Set within a quiet ten-acre landscape, the Courtney Road Residence is conceived as an architectural extension of the land itself. Its low, sweeping form follows the natural contours, ensuring the house feels not imposed upon the site but born from it. Oriented to frame the southern view of Mount Hood and to capture the soft morning light from the east, the residence anchors daily living in the enduring rhythms of place.

The building rests lightly above the ground plane, a subtle lift that, along with its fire-resistant materials, enhances protection in this wildfire-prone region. Cast-in-place concrete walls at each corner visually and structurally ground the home, anchoring it into the landscape while framing outward views. Against this sense of permanence, the upper volume assumes a lighter character—horizontal, restrained, and in quiet dialogue with its surroundings.

Material choices reflect both resilience and poetry. Charred wood siding, selected for its inherent fire resistance, forms a protective skin while echoing the textures of the surrounding forest. The darkened wood is complemented by the solidity of concrete, together articulating a design that is pragmatic in performance yet timeless in expression. The low-slope roof is finished with a dark gravel ballast, allowing it to blend with the muted tones of the site when seen from the higher western side of the property.

The interior experience carries this same sense of integration. With a relatively narrow footprint, the main living spaces offer continuous views to both sides of the site, so the landscape seems to flow through the home itself. This transparency dissolves the boundary between inside and out, allowing the dwelling to feel porous to light, air, and horizon. A central service core—housing a powder bathroom, pantry, coffee station, and mechanical systems—organizes the plan and quietly divides the social spaces from the pair of back-to-back offices. This arrangement supports the work-from-home life of its inhabitants while keeping the heart of the house calm, efficient, and uncluttered.

Courtney Road Residence embodies a balance of strength and lightness, resilience and openness. It is a house that shelters while remaining transparently engaged with its setting, a dwelling that feels deeply rooted in the land yet open to the horizon.
