Methodist Hood River Addition

This 1,400-square-foot addition transforms an existing two-bedroom apartment/garage into a complete family residence, nestled on a generous parcel just off Methodist Road in Hood River. The design extends the linear geometry of the original structure in a single, deliberate gesture, unifying old and new under a cohesive architectural language.

The addition introduces a spacious new main living area, including an open kitchen, dining zone, and a primary bedroom suite with an adjacent powder bath. A custom steel stairway—clinging to the former exterior wall of the existing structure—creates a dynamic vertical connection to the two upper-level bedrooms, reorienting circulation and enhancing spatial flow.

Architecturally, the continuation of the original roofline and the folding, inward-sloping wall planes of the addition define a new primary entry while shaping generous, south-facing outdoor spaces. These moments of extension and carve-out lend a quiet drama to the otherwise simple massing.

Inside, natural light pours in from all directions, animating the interiors throughout the day. The material palette is restrained and warm, with exposed aggregate concrete floors (radiant heated) and natural wood ceilings offering a tactile, light-industrial character that complements the home’s honest construction.

Now nearing completion, the project reflects a balance of practical living and thoughtful design—resolving the site, the program, and the structure with clarity and ease.
