NW Backyard Blues #1

Everyone gets the blues. Even backyards.

That was the case at this beautiful home in Northwest Portland, where a thoughtfully renovated house still lacked a meaningful connection to its backyard. The existing deck, located off the main kitchen and gathering space, awkwardly directed movement away from the yard—requiring a trip down to the driveway and around the house before reaching the landscape below. Unsurprisingly, the backyard remained largely underused.

Our task was simple: create an invitation.

Rather than starting over, we reimagined what was already there. Half of the existing upper deck was retained as a practical grilling and gathering area, while the remainder gracefully steps and unfolds into the backyard below. A board-formed concrete planter anchors the composition and organizes the surrounding outdoor spaces, creating a natural sense of flow and arrival.

The new lower tiered deck offers an intimate setting for outdoor dining and summer evenings, comfortably sheltered from neighboring views. Rich dark red Meranti and mahogany decking bring warmth and texture, while the existing privacy fence was re-skinned to unify the experience. Simple paver patios, layered plantings, and a soft white-noise water feature complete the transformation.

The result is a backyard no longer overlooked, but fully woven into daily life—ready for long evenings and summer cocktails.
