Sherman Observatory
Radical Renovation & Expansion – In Progress | Hood River, Oregon
This transformative renovation redefines a modest existing structure perched on Sherman Avenue in Hood River. With panoramic views of the Columbia River and Mt. Adams beyond, the site offers an extraordinary backdrop for a bold architectural intervention.
The new design responds to both the constraints and opportunities of the site—expanding horizontally to utilize the generous lot, while preserving the home’s connection to grade. A reconfigured entry sequence introduces a sculpted courtyard, creating a sheltered threshold and a clear architectural identity.
At the heart of the interior, a dramatic new roof form integrates a linear monitor skylight that invites diffuse north light deep into the space—subtly animating daily life with changing sky conditions.
One of the home’s defining elements is a bespoke office retreat, elevated above the primary suite and accessed through concealed doors. This vertical extension—referred to affectionately as “the snorkel”—offers immersive, 180-degree views, transforming the workspace into a true observatory. It’s an expressive gesture of both function and delight, capturing the spirit of the renovation as a whole.
This project explores the intersection of restraint and expression—rooted in its context while unapologetically forward-looking.
