Sandy, OR Residence
This residence, nestled in a clearing on a 16-acre property in Sandy, OR, is designed for a young family. With a distant Mt. Hood to the east and an existing barn nearby, the house is oriented to capture the landscape and morning light. The design blends contemporary aesthetics with a connection to the site, drawing on materials inspired by neighboring agrarian structures: vertical reverse board and batten wood siding and a standing-seam metal roof. Inside, the clean, minimalist main living space, echoes clean Scandinavian design and a vaulted wood ceiling mirrors the exterior’s gabled form, creating a sense of openness and simplicity.
The design is anchored by a clear, two-bar plan, establishing both the structure’s rhythm and the seamless flow between spaces. One bar houses the garage and mudroom, while the other accommodates the primary living areas. These two bars are subtly offset, carving out a welcoming entry courtyard to the east and a tranquil outdoor space to the west. Intentional punctures along the bars invite the landscape in, creating intimate outdoor pockets that embrace the home from every side. Overhead, two gabled roof forms—reminiscent of the site’s agrarian heritage—cloak the volumes in elegant simplicity. A dormer extension on the east extends the roofline, defining and sheltering the outdoor space off the main living area, blurring the lines between inside and out.
